Bernstein Shur Sponsors the American Heart Association’s 2019 Go Red Luncheon.
Joan Fortin, Shareholder and Board Member of Bernstein Shur, spoke yesterday as Chair of the American Heart Association’s 2019 Go Red Luncheon. The event was much anticipated and attended by over 600 people, held yesterday March 21st at Portland’s Holiday Inn by the Bay. The annual Go Red Luncheon is the culmination of a year long, and ongoing, effort to educate and fight against cardiovascular disease and strokes in women. The day included educational components, health screenings, a silent auction and distinguished honorees.
Bernstein Shur Donates $10,000 to My Place Teen Center
In effort to raise awareness about local nonprofit organizations, Bernstein Shur recently asked our clients to vote for an organization to receive a $10,000 donation. We had a terrific response and hope many of you were able to view all five videos to get a closer look at the great work these non-profits bring to our community. After the votes were tallied the clear winner was My Place Teen Center!
My Place Teen Center is a free, positive youth development program that specializes in instilling grit, and alleviating hunger and trauma. They provide daily meals and free, positive youth development programming for youth in Cumberland and York counties. The other four organizations who did not win, nevertheless received great publicity and each has a new video to help educate and promote their cause.

We Welcome Ian Green and Kaitlyn Husar to the Firm
Bernstein Shur welcomes Ian C. Green and Kaitlyn Husar as associates.
Green will join the firm’s Business Practice Group, where he will focus on mergers and acquisitions, commercial lending, corporate governance, and general business transactions. Prior to joining Bernstein Shur, Green was an associate at a local Portland law firm and was a summer clerk at the Executive Office for Immigration Review for the U.S. Department of Justice.
Green earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and his B.A., magna cum laude, from Oakland University. He is admitted to practice in the state of ME and was a recipient of the Kenneth R. Clegg Award, which is awarded to those with the highest combined score for a first-time bar examinee. He resides in Windham, ME.
Husar will join the firm’s Business Restructuring and Insolvency Practice Group where she will focus on all manner of insolvency matters. Prior to joining Bernstein Shur, Husar was an associate at a local Portland law firm and served as a judicial extern for Judge Peter Carey at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of ME, and was a student attorney for the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic. She is a member of the ME section of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross and was selected to be a member of the ME Association of Nonprofit’s 2018 Emerging Leaders Class. Husar was named a Distinguished Law Student for the First Circuit by the American College of Bankruptcy, and received the American Bankruptcy Institute’s Medal for Excellence in Bankruptcy Studies.
Husar earned her J.D from the University of Maine School of Law and her B.A. from Earlham College. She is admitted to practice in the state of ME and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and resides in Portland, ME.

Governor Mills Welcomes Canadian and ME Business Leaders Looking to Strengthen Trade
Bernstein Shur hosted an event in which more than 30 Canadian entrepreneurs representing 20 companies that are part of a business accelerator program in Sherbrooke, Que., learned about research, partnerships and the business advantages to considering expansion into the US. The businesses are part of ACET Banque Nationale at the University of Sherbrooke, a business accelerator, which, since 2011, has seen 300 jobs created by 85 companies. Their stop in Portland was part of a two day trip through Vermont, Massachusetts and ME to meet with economic development officials and business leaders to foster cross-border relationships.
Participating panelists included the honorable Governor Janet Mills, ME International Trade Center President Wade Merritt; Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Heather Johnson; US Business Development Director Pierre Harvey; ME Technology Institute President Brian Whitney; BioME Executive Director Agnieszka Carpenter; Bernstein Shur attorney Tony Perkins and Quebec Delegate (in Boston) Marie-Claude Francoeur.
