Four Attorneys Elected Bernstein Shur Shareholders

Bernstein Shur, one of northern New England’s largest law firms, announced the election of Shana Cook Mueller, Edward Sackman, Philip R. Saucier and Hawley R. Strait as shareholders.

Shana Cook Mueller

Shana Cook Mueller is a member of Bernstein Shur’s Municipal and Regulatory Practice Group and is based in the firm’s Portland, ME office. Her municipal practice focuses on economic development, tax increment financing, public finance and municipal bonds, land use law, general municipal law including tax matters, zoning issues and amending ordinances. She is AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell for her work in municipal law, public finance and zoning, planning and land use. Mueller’s practice also includes financial services industry work relating to corporate trust services, advising corporate clients on trustee obligations in connection with trust transactions, tax-exempt and taxable bond issues, refunding issues, escrow agreements and redemptions.

A resident of North Yarmouth, ME, Mueller earned her JD from University of Connecticut, MPA from University of Connecticut Department of Public Policy and her BA from Brown University. Prior to joining Bernstein Shur, she was a public policy researcher and analyst at an economics and management consulting firm in Boston.

Ned Sackman

Edward “Ned” Sackman is a member of the Business Law Practice Group and based in the firm’s Manchester, New Hampshire office. His practice focuses on intellectual property and complex commercial litigation including trade secrets, trademark infringement, breach of license, copyright infringement, shareholder buyout, breach of commercial contract and breach of fiduciary duty. He is chair of New Lawyers Committee for the New Hampshire Bar Association.

A resident of Concord, New Hampshire, Sackman earned his JD from University of Virginia School of Law and his BA from Tulane University. Prior to joining Bernstein Shur, he clerked for Judge Thomas M. Golden of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Phil Saucier

Philip R. Saucier is a member of the firm’s Municipal and Regulatory Practice Group and the Legislative and Political Law Practice Group, and is based in the Portland, ME office. His municipal and regulatory practice focuses on land use and development matters, zoning issues, administrative and judicial appeals, and general municipal law including Freedom of Access Act and drafting ordinances. His legislative and political practice focuses on assisting clients with health care, municipal and land use matters before the ME State Legislature. Saucier also advises clients on campaign compliance and election law. He is chair of the ME State Bar Association, Municipal Section.

A resident of Portland, ME, Saucier earned his JD from the University of Maine School of Law, cum laude, where he was editor in chief of ME Law Review and his BA from Vassar College. Prior to joining Bernstein Shur, he worked as an urban/land use planner, served as a senior policy and legal advisor to Governor John E. Baldacci and clerked for Hon. John A. Woodcock, Jr., U.S. District Court for the District of ME.

Hawley Strait

Hawley R. Strait is a member of the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group and is based in the Portland, ME office. His practice includes all aspects of real estate law, commercial and residential development, acquisitions, sales, financing and leasing. He represents a variety of clients including individuals, banking institutions and real estate developers in a wide array of transactions involving retail stores and shopping centers, office buildings, condominiums, wind power projects and other commercial developments. He is chair of the Greater Portland YMCA Advisory Board and a member of the board of directors of the YMCA of Southern ME.

A resident of Yarmouth, ME, Strait earned his JD from Pace University School of Law, cum laude, where he was the managing editor for Pace Law Review and his BA from Bates College, cum laude. Prior to joining Bernstein Shur, he was an intern for Hon. Nina Gershon, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
