Diversity Hiring Coalition Event
On Thursday, November 13th, Diversity Hiring Coalition and Portland Adult Education hosted a Meet & Greet Networking Event for Professional New Mainers held at the Portland Public Library. Our own Director of HR, Mary Beth Turcotte, is co-chair of the DHC and welcomed the 22 employers, from Bowdoin College to IDEXX, and more than 60 students to the event. This event, the first of its kind for the DHC, focused on providing opportunities to new Mainers with professional work experience and credentials from their home countries, to interact with DHC members and to further hone their networking and professional job-seeking skills. This opportunity was created to connect employers and talented job-seekers one-on-one, in an informational networking opportunity.
The session included mock interviews, Q&A’s with employers, resume critiques and breakout learning sessions that covered: interviewing tips and skills, team building activities, social media for your resume, and you got the job, now what do you do?
In her opening remarks, Mary Beth summarized the DHC’s mission, stating, “The DHC welcomes the opportunity to provide this learning experience for students and employers. It is our desire that everyone learns more about the hiring process, the students and opportunities in our state. It is our mission to provide leadership and resources that help ME employers to increase, support and retain racial and ethnic diversity in the workplace. The DHC expects to be a resource for job seekers exploring career opportunities with ME employers, and to provide networking opportunities for member employers.”
